Complete List Of Dorm Must Haves

Packing for you child to go to college for the first time can be overwhelming. Try my list of must haves to make sure you got everything. There are some fun things on there too.

My previous post was my top 10 favorite buys for my college freshman. Here is my complete list of must haves for at college in the dorms.

Electronics

Surge Protector – This one is perfect! It has just the right amount of plugs and USB ports.

Mini Fridge – Be sure to see what the rules for your specific college are regarding mini refrigerators.

Amazon Stick – Great paired with a good monitor or tv. My son loved watching his favorite shows when they came out.

Ethernet Cable – Direct internet can be necessary in a dorm. Internet can be spotty but using an ethernet cable can help. This one is braided and super flexible.

Monitor – Great monitor for both gaming and watching tv as well as doing homework.

Desk light and charging station – This light has so many features. It dims and it charges your phone. One less cord on the desk!

Phone Battery – Sometimes college students are out all day based on their busy schedules and having a portable battery means mom can always get a hold of them.

Bedding

Call Your Mom/Text Your Mom Pillow……needs no explanation.

Bedding Set – Super simple yet just what my son needed. Let’s face it. Most boys just sleep with the sheet and never make the bed. Don’t waste your time looking for a cute comforter when it might just stay in pile under the bed.

Mattress Cover – Great for keeping dust, dust mites and bed bugs away. This one is soft and does not crinkle when you move on it.

Mattress Topper – My son only needed the 2 inch topper. It was already super comfortable.

Pillow – We searched high and low for the best pillow. This one won by far. Get a Purple Pillow!

Pillow for sitting – Most kids have these on their beds to help sit and do homework.

Organization

Desk Organizer – Simple organizer for basic desk items.

Daily Agenda/Planner – My son loves this basic planner for him to keep track of his homework and tests. This one is small and fits in the small pocket of his backpack.

Movable Drawers – If your college student has their bed captain height, this will fit perfectly under it. Extra drawers always come in handy. We put food/snacks in them more than clothes.

Shoe Organizer – Boys don’t collect clothes but they usually collect shoes. This helped my son keep all of his off the floor at school and at home.

3M Hooks -Hang everything up! We hung sweatshirts, towels, gym bags, anything with a string. There is very little floor space so the more you hang up on the wall the better!

Kitchen Items

Storage Cart – This can hold all your dishes, coffee maker, etc. Great to move around the room if needed.

Keurig Coffee Maker – Need it say more?

Toiletry Items

Shower Caddy – This fabric one was so easy to use. The S hook make it so he could hang it on the shower door during his shower and then hang it back in the room to keep dry.

Over the door hooks – Hang more items! Over the closet door or even over the bed frames.

Facial Trimmer

Towels

Shower Shoes – a must!

Furniture

Dorm Chair

Rug

Cubby/Nightstand

Miscellaneous

Suitcase for all the trips back home

Ikea Bags – We only needed 3 and worked great! Put the clothes on hangers in the bags on the hanger. Just zip it up and go!

Air Purifier – This one is amazing! We all have one at home now. It is so quiet and can run constantly. It even tells you how the air is on the app on your phone.

Woozoo Fan – Everyone talks about the Woozoo Fan! It is as amazing as they say. Worth every penny!

Bed Shelfie – Loved this so much I wanted one for myself. Keeps phone and drink cup right at the bedside.

Dorm Room Safe – Just in case you want to lock up your valuables.

Vacuum – Just hope they actually use it.

Laundry/hamper – Super easy to carry dirty clothes to the laundry room. And back. The side pocket is handy for carrying the detergent or dryer sheets.

For Fun

Room Lights – We tried out several and these were by far the best!

Spike Ball

Hammock

Beach Chair

What do boys need to bring to college?

Boys! Boys have no idea what they want to take to their dorm rooms. They might have a flag or a picture that they are planning on hanging on a bare wall but that is probably the extent of it. Here are my top 10 things to bring to college freshman year.

College. It is the dreaded 7 letter word that moms aren’t ready to hear. We are genuinely excited and happy for your children to get into college and go spread their wings but deep down inside we know you are leaving the nest. So to make this as painless as possible for you other moms out there, I thought I would share what items made the transition from home to college easier for me and my son.

A Surge Protector

My son’s first year of college his dorm room only had ONE OUTLET on his side of the room. ONE. ONE OUTLET WITH 2 CONNECTIONS! I was blown away! We had a mini fridge, desk light, charger upon chargers. How would we ever plug them all in. Then I found this and had it delivered to the nearest Amazon hub locker overnight. Such a game changer!!! This one is from GE and has great safety ratings. It also have USB ports for his apple plugs which came in super handy. By far, my most proud buy!

A Mini Fridge

Most dorms have rules about mini refrigerators. Be sure to look it up before buying one. Ours had to be less than 2 cubic feet. He really didn’t need it to be any bigger but there are definitely cooler ones with a mini freezer at the top if you want that.

Hanging Shoe Storage

Boys don’t usually have lots of clothes but some do have lots of SHOES! For us a hanging shoe holder was a must! This was able to hang in his wardrobe and hold most of his shoes. Definitely beats having them all over the floor.

Mattress Topper

Everyone said to get a mattress topper. So we did. The 2 inch topper was plenty comfortable but you can also get the comfy 3 inch topper. This fit great under the fitted sheet. Super comfortable. The last thing I wanted was for him to be homesick and couldn’t sleep at night. Homesick on a super comfortable bed was much better.

Get the IKEA Bags for moving!

I was skeptical at first but found this great deal and got them anyway. Now they are the first thing we pack up. Clothes on hangers go in easy and you can leave the hangers sticking our and just zip up to them. Easy to put clothes right back into the closet. All of his bedding and towels fit in one bag. They hold A LOT!

A Bed Shelfie

This shelf is made specifically for dorm beds. It is great to put their cell phone at night or food while they are doing homework. Very fun shelf to have!

Coffee Maker

The single cup Keurig was perfect for a quick cup of coffee or a cup of hot water for tea, etc. Nice to know when he is sick that he can make a hot cup of tea to help at night.

Air Purifier

Speaking of getting sick…. Sharing germs is definitely easier in a dorm. This air purifier is so quiet and can run non stop. I definitely think it helped with allergens, dust and hopefully germs. Everyone in our house has one now.

The One And Only Woozoo Fan!

If you are in any sort of Facebook group for moms sending kids to college (yes, there are several groups out there) you should have heard about this amazing fan. The Woozoo Fan. It does everything. It rotates. It oscillates. It has different speeds. It even has a remote! It is amazing!

ROOM LIGHTS!

These are so much fun and really change the look of a room. They are also nice at night because they aren’t as bright. They come with a remote for easy on and off. These lights can be controlled on your phone and can even be set to music. We tried other lights before but these were definitely winners.

Hang in there moms! You got this!
