What do boys need to bring to college?

Boys! Boys have no idea what they want to take to their dorm rooms. They might have a flag or a picture that they are planning on hanging on a bare wall but that is probably the extent of it. Here are my top 10 things to bring to college freshman year.

College. It is the dreaded 7 letter word that moms aren’t ready to hear. We are genuinely excited and happy for your children to get into college and go spread their wings but deep down inside we know you are leaving the nest. So to make this as painless as possible for you other moms out there, I thought I would share what items made the transition from home to college easier for me and my son.

A Surge Protector

My son’s first year of college his dorm room only had ONE OUTLET on his side of the room. ONE. ONE OUTLET WITH 2 CONNECTIONS! I was blown away! We had a mini fridge, desk light, charger upon chargers. How would we ever plug them all in. Then I found this and had it delivered to the nearest Amazon hub locker overnight. Such a game changer!!! This one is from GE and has great safety ratings. It also have USB ports for his apple plugs which came in super handy. By far, my most proud buy!

A Mini Fridge

Most dorms have rules about mini refrigerators. Be sure to look it up before buying one. Ours had to be less than 2 cubic feet. He really didn’t need it to be any bigger but there are definitely cooler ones with a mini freezer at the top if you want that.

Hanging Shoe Storage

Boys don’t usually have lots of clothes but some do have lots of SHOES! For us a hanging shoe holder was a must! This was able to hang in his wardrobe and hold most of his shoes. Definitely beats having them all over the floor.

Mattress Topper

Everyone said to get a mattress topper. So we did. The 2 inch topper was plenty comfortable but you can also get the comfy 3 inch topper. This fit great under the fitted sheet. Super comfortable. The last thing I wanted was for him to be homesick and couldn’t sleep at night. Homesick on a super comfortable bed was much better.

Get the IKEA Bags for moving!

I was skeptical at first but found this great deal and got them anyway. Now they are the first thing we pack up. Clothes on hangers go in easy and you can leave the hangers sticking our and just zip up to them. Easy to put clothes right back into the closet. All of his bedding and towels fit in one bag. They hold A LOT!

A Bed Shelfie

This shelf is made specifically for dorm beds. It is great to put their cell phone at night or food while they are doing homework. Very fun shelf to have!

Coffee Maker

The single cup Keurig was perfect for a quick cup of coffee or a cup of hot water for tea, etc. Nice to know when he is sick that he can make a hot cup of tea to help at night.

Air Purifier

Speaking of getting sick…. Sharing germs is definitely easier in a dorm. This air purifier is so quiet and can run non stop. I definitely think it helped with allergens, dust and hopefully germs. Everyone in our house has one now.

The One And Only Woozoo Fan!

If you are in any sort of Facebook group for moms sending kids to college (yes, there are several groups out there) you should have heard about this amazing fan. The Woozoo Fan. It does everything. It rotates. It oscillates. It has different speeds. It even has a remote! It is amazing!

ROOM LIGHTS!

These are so much fun and really change the look of a room. They are also nice at night because they aren’t as bright. They come with a remote for easy on and off. These lights can be controlled on your phone and can even be set to music. We tried other lights before but these were definitely winners.

Hang in there moms! You got this!
